What Is a Community Postcard Mailer?

A community postcard mailer is an oversized 9x12 direct mail piece that multiple local businesses share. Each business purchases an ad position, a defined section of the postcard, and the printing and postage cost is divided among all participating advertisers. The result is a full-color, professionally printed postcard delivered to local households at a fraction of what a solo campaign would cost.

TownFavorite organizes these campaigns across the Birmingham metro area. Each campaign covers a specific city or neighborhood, and businesses select the product that matches their coverage and budget goals.

USPS EDDM and Mailing Areas

TownFavorite campaigns use selected USPS carrier routes through the Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) program. EDDM allows mailers to be delivered to eligible addresses on a selected carrier route without requiring a purchased mailing list. Routes are selected by ZIP code and carrier route number, and each route covers a defined geographic area, typically a neighborhood or subdivision.

Depending on the route-selection option, EDDM delivery may include residential addresses only, or both residential and business addresses. Not every route necessarily includes both. USPS delivers the mailpiece to eligible addresses on the selected routes as part of normal mail delivery. Delivery timelines and coverage are subject to USPS operational standards. TownFavorite does not control USPS delivery schedules or guarantee specific delivery dates.

It is worth understanding the difference between a ZIP code and a USPS carrier route. A ZIP code may contain dozens of carrier routes covering tens of thousands of addresses. TownFavorite campaigns select specific routes within a city or ZIP code to match the product's household count. The mailing area is the set of routes included in your campaign, not the entire ZIP code.

What the Advertiser Receives

When you purchase a slot, you receive a defined ad position on the 9x12 postcard for one campaign cycle. Your ad is printed alongside other participating businesses and delivered to households on the selected USPS routes. You do not receive a solo mailer, a dedicated postcard, or a mailing list.

Every TownFavorite 9x12 mailer contains 16 ad positions, 8 on Side A and 8 on Side B. Community, Maximum, and Elite use the same physical layout but differ in price, household reach, and audience strategy.

TownFavorite offers an optional design service for advertisers who need help producing artwork. If you use your own designer, TownFavorite will provide the artwork specifications for your ad position.

Artwork Requirements and Proof Approval

Each ad position has defined dimensions based on its location on the 9x12 postcard. TownFavorite reviews submitted artwork for production readiness and may request revisions when necessary. Advertisers should confirm the current proof and final-approval process before submitting time-sensitive artwork.

Do not assume specific bleed requirements, DPI thresholds, or approval deadlines without confirming current specifications with TownFavorite directly. Production timelines vary by campaign.

Printing and Mailing

TownFavorite coordinates the production schedule after advertiser materials are received. The 9x12 full-color postcard is printed on heavy card stock. Once printed, the mailer is submitted to USPS under the EDDM program for delivery to the selected carrier routes. USPS delivers to eligible addresses on those routes as part of normal mail delivery.

Tracking Your Campaign Results

Direct mail does not provide automatic tracking the way digital advertising does. Advertisers who want to measure response should build tracking into their ad creative before production. Common approaches include a dedicated phone number, a unique landing page URL, a QR code that links to a tracked destination, a coupon code, or a specific offer that can only be redeemed by someone who received the mailer.

Setting up at least one trackable element before your campaign mails is strongly recommended. Without it, you will have no direct way to attribute calls, form submissions, or walk-ins to the postcard.

Limitations and Tradeoffs

Community postcard mailers are not the right choice for every business or every goal. A few honest tradeoffs to consider before purchasing:

Your ad shares space with other businesses. You are not the only advertiser on the postcard. Recipients will see multiple businesses at once. If exclusive presence matters for your brand, a solo mailer is a better fit.

You cannot control who else is on the mailer. Unless a category exclusivity arrangement is in place, a competitor in your category could appear on the same postcard. Confirm current policy before purchase.

Delivery is through USPS to eligible addresses on selected routes. Vacancies, delivery exceptions, and route-level variations are part of normal USPS operations. TownFavorite does not guarantee that every address on a route will receive the mailer.

Results are not guaranteed. Response rates vary by business type, offer quality, creative execution, and market conditions. No specific ROI, response rate, or revenue outcome can be promised.

When a Solo Mailer May Be a Better Choice

A community postcard mailer makes sense when cost efficiency and broad reach are the priorities. A solo mailer may be a better choice when you need exclusive presence, a larger ad format, a custom mailing list, or a specific delivery date that does not align with a shared campaign schedule. Businesses that need to control every element of the creative experience, and can justify the full production and postage cost, may find solo direct mail worth the premium.

How to Choose Among the Three Products

Start with your service area and your goals. Community Reach at $600 for 5,000 homes is suited for businesses focused on broad neighborhood awareness and local visibility. Maximum Reach at $850 for 10,000 homes offers the widest coverage and the lowest cost per household, a strong choice when market saturation is the goal. Elite Targeted Reach at $900 for 2,500 selected homes uses a more selective audience strategy for businesses that prioritize audience characteristics over total reach.

If you are unsure which product fits your goals, the Pricing page walks through each option in detail, and TownFavorite can discuss your specific situation before you commit.
